Enormous effort is put into researching and marketing “the perfect potato crisp” while research into stress at work, for example, is ignored. How important arte staff working conditions? Should employers research and improve the working conditions of their staff or should they concentrate more on their product?

SAMPLE ANSWER:

In today’s world, almost every person is struggling with financial, physical and mental health challenges. And it won’t be wrong to say that almost all such challenges originate in some way or the other from one’s employment conditions. Be it their pay structure, work culture or job safety, all have an effect on the employees’ well-being. This leads us to the question – should employers focus on the working conditions of their employees or focus more on improving their product.

In my opinion, the old saying – “charity begins at home” applies to all organisations. In order to attract and have a positive impact on the customers, all companies need to reflect their values onto their employees to make the organisation look attractive as a whole. Moreover, customers would trust a company more if they treat their employees well as this will build trust over the company’s human values. Furthermore, when employees see that their employer is trying to improve their work conditions, they will naturally feel a sense of belongingness and will work even harder to contribute into the company’s goal. Additionally, lower mental stress increases efficiency which can lead to more productivity.

On the other hand, some people might be of the view that companies should focus on developing their products and that great products would automatically lead to growth and will attract customers anyways. Also, some believe that if employees are pampered, they get used to spoon feeding and might not work as hard, which leads to loss in productivity. Although, this might be true to some extent, but they should not forget that it’s the employees who work as a team to develop the products and not the company itself.

To conclude, the companies should put some effort in improving their employees’ working standard by investing into research in this field. Also, they can have a control, monitoring and historical comparison system to measure the positive effects of such efforts and weigh their pros and cons regularly.
